Address: ul. Wojciecha Bogusławskiego 1 , 80-980 Gdańsk

The Highland Gate, formerly also known as the "High Gate" was once the main entrance to Gdansk, while being a defensive object. It was within its walls that Polish kings were solemnly welcomed and keys to the city were handed to them. The gate was built in the years 1574 - 1576 according to the design of Jan Kramer. It was located in the western part of modern Gdańsk fortifications, which in the past also included a high earth rampart, reinforced with powerful bastions. A wide, water-filled moat ran ahead of them, above which there were drawbridges. There were once two terrible roads leading from the Gate to the city - passages in the embankment, ending on both sides of the western part of Przedbramia at ul. Długa, called Katownia. The brick facade of the Highland Gate is richly decorated by the talented sculptor Wilhelm van den Blocke. It consists of sandstone slabs, clothed with intricate floral ornament. An unusual sculptural product is also found on the attic of the gate, a magnificent heraldic setting, on which the artist placed the stone coats of arms of the Commonwealth, Royal Prussia and Gdańsk. Above them are four sculptures of lions. Three Latin sayings can also be seen on the gate walls: - "Iustitia et pietas duo sunt regnorum omnium fundamenta" - "Justice and piety are the foundation of all kingdoms"; - "Civitatibus haec optanda bona maximae: pax, libertas, concordia" - "The most desirable goods by society are: peace, freedom, agreement"; - "Sapientissimae fiunt omnia que pro republica fiunt" - "The wisest is done everything that is done for the Commonwealth." In 1903, a guardhouse, or a guardhouse, was moved to the free-standing gate building. In 1920, the Norddeutscher Lloyd travel agency was located here. During the war in 1939-1945, the gate suffered damage, but not much. After the war, the building served the Polish branch of the "Orbis" Travel Agency, with tourist information in its side passages. In 2002, the gate was taken over by the Historical Museum of the City of Gdańsk. Currently, the Regional Tourist Information Center is located here.
