Erected for the mayor Johann Speymann (a rich merchant and enlightened patron of art), who held the highest dignities and municipal offices in the early 17th century, and for his wife Judyta of Bachry. Today's mannerist facade, created in the early 17th century, is the work of Abraham van den Blocke, an architect and sculptor. Numerous gilding was made by Hans Vogt from Rostock. The tenement house is distinguished by a magnificent facade in the style of Flemish Mannerism, has the richest sculptural decoration in Gdańsk, topped with an attic, it is also decorated with statues of Cleopatra, Oedipus, Achilles and Antigone. According to legend, the ghost of the beautiful Judyta Speymann whispers in the corridors of the Golden Tenement House, whispering: "Do justice, don't be afraid of anyone."
