Address: ul. Stara Twierdza 1 , 80-551 Gdańsk

The strategic importance of Wisłoujście was appreciated very early. The first permanent fortification building was created here after the liberation of Gdańsk from the Teutonic rule (1308-1454). In 1482, a brick, cylindrical tower was erected, used for defense purposes and as a lighthouse. In 1562, on the site of the wooden fortifications surrounding the tower, a three-story brick wreath was erected with casemates. When the conflict broke out between Gdańsk and the royal capers in 1568, the caper ships standing on the road were attacked. Soon, however, the Wisłoujście Fortress is again one of the points of resistance against King Stefan Batory. In 1577, it was besieged by the royal army, but despite several attempts, the siege failed. In the years 1624-26 the so-called Eastern Wall. It consisted of 5 earth bastions preceded by a moat. In the years 1657-58, there was a combination of a single defense system of the fortress fortifications and the city's defense system. After World War I, the Fortress lost its military significance. In the interwar period, it served as a base for sailing clubs. In 1945 it was almost completely destroyed. Since 1974, the Wisłoujście Fortress has been managed by the Historical Museum of the City of Gdańsk. From this moment, rescue and archaeological, historical and conservation works are carried out.
