Address: ul. Cystersów 18 , 80-330 Gdańsk
The palace was the seat of abbots appointed by the King of Prussia, Charles and Joseph Hohenzollern. After the death of the last building was long abandoned. In 1926, on the initiative of the authorities of the Free City of Gdańsk, the Staatliches Landesmuseum für Danzinger Geschichte was established with an exhibition showing the history of the Gdańsk region. During World War II, the palace was burned to the ground. In the 1960s, the building was rebuilt thanks to the efforts of the Pomeranian Museum in Gdańsk for the seat of its departments: ethnographic and modern art. In 1972, the museum received the status of a National Museum. The year 1989 introduced further organizational changes. Currently, the Modern Art Department consists of: Painting and Drawing Department, Graphic Arts and Fabric Studio, Ceramics and Sculpture Studio and Theater Department. The Permanent Gallery of Polish Modern Art contains some 400 works by the greatest Polish artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. Presented temporary exhibitions show all artists and the most interesting phenomena in Polish art of the 19th and 20th centuries. The Contemporary Art Department organizes problem and monographic exhibitions, as well as competitive projects. The Abbots' Palace also hosts concerts of early and contemporary music, readings, symposia and meetings with artists.
