The reserve is part of the coastal cliff moraine plateau called Kępa Redłowska. The purpose of protection is to preserve the natural beech forests and rowan sites. Characteristic specific geological processes of sea abrasion occur in the reserve. This is the first reserve created in the area of the former Gdańsk Voivodeship, one of the oldest in Poland.
