Address: ul. Poniatowskiego 8 , 81-724 Sopot
The museum has been in existence since 2001. A new institution was established by the Sopot City Council as part of the celebration of the Centenary of the City of Sopot, the seat of which was a historic villa built in 1903 by the Gdańsk merchant Ernst August Claaszen (sugar and machinery buyer, insurance broker, American consul and art collector). The representative rooms on the ground floor of the villa were intended for a permanent exhibition of historic historical interiors, reconstructed on the basis of old photographic documentation, transferred to the museum by the daughter of the first owner of the villa. On the first floor, in the former bedrooms, there were variable exhibition rooms, the attic was occupied by studios and offices. Restaurant rooms were designed in the former basement. The museum collects paintings, graphics, sculptures and handicrafts illustrating the history of the city and the region. In addition to art and artistic collections, the museum contains archival materials: old photographs, postcards, documents, maps and publications related to Sopot and other towns, mainly seaside resorts.
