An institution based in Gdańsk, established on the basis of the agreement of 8 November 2007 on the establishment and operation of a joint cultural institution under the name European Solidarity Center, concluded between the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, the Pomeranian Voivodeship, the City of Gdańsk, and the Independent Solidarity Trade Union and the Solidarity Center Foundation. The declared objective of the Center is to "promote the heritage of" Solidarity "in Poland and other countries and to actively participate in building a European identity." The center is managed by a director appointed for a four-year term. The Center has a 16-member Council, also appointed for a four-year term. Members of the Council perform their function socially without remuneration. There is also a Historical and Program College at the Center. The President of the City of Gdańsk supervises the Center. The center is to become a Central European agora for exchanging views on the problem of social justice. Currently, the European Solidarity Center conducts educational, scientific, publishing and exhibition activities (eg the "Roads to Freedom" exhibition as well as temporary and outdoor exhibitions).
